Seems like Pete Buttigieg would be the logical choice. He’s between gigs, he is a military veteran, he can slice and dice the idiots on Fox, and is not afraid to. Also,it would give him free press, and elevate his profile for his run for Governor of Michigan.

Please Dems get it together and do this!!!!

That is too safe & obvious choice. I agree that Pete can play the role spectacularly, but let's think big! Pete & AOC. Include Republican politicians like Adam.

Democrats have been playing it safe for too long & that's what got us here.

Shadow Cabinet like the Brits do is brilliant. I watch Good Morning Britain every day, and Question Time that airs weekly. The Shadow Cabinet gets a lot of exposure. They can be effective.

I assume you mean Kinzinger? Not a bad idea, but remember, while he's anti-TrumPox, he's still a Republican, and still conservative. He doesn't stand for anything the Democratic party stands for - or at least should.

A great idea! PETE BUTIGIEG would be ideal! Smart and an exceptional communicator. He really should be PRESIDENT, but for now he would be very effective at a daily Democratic Press briefing.

Mayor Pete. AOC is needed in the House, because she has bigger balls than ANY of the boys. Maybe she’ll inspire one or two of them to step up.

Kinzinger is great when it comes to speaking out against TrumPox, but he's still Republican and still conservative and stands pretty much against everything Dems stand for. I'd rather see someone like Mark Milley in the role.

What a GREAT IDEA!!! Dems MUST start messaging every day against the shit that comes out of the poor excuse of a human beings mouth. To now call Zelenskyy a DICTATOR! I’m am beyond disgusted that you spineless Republicans would cower. Trust me when the dust has settled and the PEOPLE of the US take back their government YOU will be held accountable. Start getting on board the Al Green impeachment movement, make your voices heard the WORLD is watching!

So, let’s take action. Contact Sec. Buttigieg. I’m going to reach out to him. Let’s all do it. Ask him to step up for the Dems. And, you know, democracy.

Wait-Pete as a spokesperson for “Democrats”? Does he speak for all “Democrats”? Same with AOC. I don’t see current Democrat leadership as seeing Pete or AOC as their leader. Therein is the rub. Democrat leadership has failed many people for the past 45 years.

Michael Markman's avatar

Good points. There is, however, a difference between a spokesperson and a leader. A spokesperson isn't there to expound on their personal policy proposals, but to speak for the party.

Let's break this down into three questions:

1. Should the Democrats have an official press secretary? I think the answer is definitely yes. A single point of focus in an official daily briefing—with guests—can help focus the national debate.

2. Is it even possible for the Democrats to have an official press secretary? I think this gets to the heart of your post. Is there a consensus position among Democrats for the Press Secretary espouse?

3. Who should fill the position? I was proposing Buttigieg and AOC, not because of their policy, but because of their proven ability to command attention and speak in human, vernacular English, and not in impenetrable consultant speak. Do you have anyone you would prefer?

I agree that both Pete and AOC have a proven ability to command attention and speak in human, vernacular English. The Democratic Party has always had a big tent, and I don’t there there is the necessary cohesion by the party to express to an official press secretary what exactly is the message to put out there, other than telling everyone what horrible leaders Trump and his ilk are. Ken Martin is the closest Dems have had to a press secretary, and he know he can’t restrict the msg to complaining about Trump. As a lifetime Dem, I have come to believe the Dems let us down starting with Bill Clinton, who we all liked at the time, right? Income inequality has put democracy at risk and Dems keep fussing about transgender females should be allowed to play in women’s’ sports. And, as a Minnesotan, I am very frustrated with Klobuchar’s milk toast approach when the place is burning down.

That is the point of forcing/reminding Democratic leadership who they answer to. Be part of the solution or just complain. Your choice.

I agree…but in the 60’s and 70’s, there was a shift to the center which Clinton accelerated. And the Dems started dropping the ball…pensions went away, 401k’s became popular and the little guy or gal with a 401 felt now they had a stake in the stock market…and then Obama…a shift to neoliberalism. Which led to a large number of people feeling left out economically.

The government had nothing to do with the loss of pensions that was businesses themselves - it gave them more profit! Neoliberal? Is that because people an an option for health care besides COBRA? Have you ever paid COBRA? I have and it’s a joke. Obama care saves a lot of people money. I am proud that he pushed it thru - you notice GOP still hasn’t replaced it / it is needed
